Don’t get fooled by the earthy hue of this smoothie recipe. You might assume that it doesn’t taste that great – but this couldn’t be further from the truth. This earthy smoothie with spinach and fruit is a true delight! Sweet and nutritious, it’s the perfect pick-me-up during a busy afternoon.

It’s all in the toppings

I love smoothies because they pack a lot of nutrition when they are made with veggies and fruits. The toppings also take smoothies to a whole other level of texture, health and deliciousness. And I am never shy with the toppings. Proof is below – check out the ones I used today, as well the other topping ideas I’ve included in this post.

Spinach is packed with vitamins and minerals that help the brain stay healthy and function at its best. Spinach also has a secret weapon: nitrates that blast the brain with increased blood flow, making it sharper. 

Cherries aren’t just a sweet and juicy snack – they’re also packed with antioxidants. Studies have shown that eating cherries can boost memory and thinking skills. Plus, cherries are full of other brain-loving nutrients like vitamin C, potassium and fiber.

Substitutions

Kale is another leafy green that can be used as a substitute for spinach.

Bananas can be replaced with mangoes that also offer natural sweetness and a tropical flair to your smoothie.

Cherries can be replaced with mixed berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries or blackberries).

Oat milk can be replaced with another dairy-free alternative such as almond milk, coconut milk or cashew milk.

Make it

Gluten free – the recipe is gluten free.

Dairy free – the recipe is dairy free.

Vegetarian/Vegan – the recipe is vegetarian/vegan.

Extra health points

I like packing a lot of nutrition in my smoothies. Greens, nuts and seeds are always my easy go-to. But I sometimes add cinnamon, bee pollen, collagen or dark chocolate chips.

Storing, freezing and reheating tips

Store

Store in the fridge for up to 24 h in an air-tight container.

Freeze

I don’t like freezing smoothies because I find that they lose some of their flavour and texture, but some people get good results from freezing them. Freezing is great for prepping ahead and enjoying the smoothies at a later time, especially during busy times. Give it try it and decide for yourself if freezing is something you’d enjoy.

Description

I truly think that you’ll enjoy this earthy smoothie delight recipe. It’s sweet and nutritious and the toppings add crunch and more flavour, making it one of my favourite smoothies. I hope it will become your favourite, too!


Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 cup oat milk
  • 2 cups frozen cherries (see note 1)
  • 2 big ripe bananas
  • 1 and 1/2 cups (not packed) fresh spinach (see note 2)
  • Toppings (optional, but delicious and nutritious) – hemp seeds, granola, coconut flakes, cashews (see note 3)

Notes

I like using at least one frozen fruit in my smoothies so I can enjoy it right away. Otherwise I have to wait until it’s chilled in the fridge.

For substitution ideas, have a look above the recipe card for some yummy inspiration.

Be creative with your toppings. I like adding nuts, seeds and granola for a crunchy texture because I usually eat the smoothie with a spoon. For more topping ideas, check out the extra health points section above.

Vitamix is my favourite blender, but any blender will work. It might not blend everything as smooth as a Vitamix would, but it would still do a good job. I’ve made this smoothie with other blenders in the past and the results were great.
